How To Replace Your 9-5 By Writing On Social Media: Escaping The Rat Race
Do this for 6-18 months and you will be free
Wake up, check your phone, brush your teeth, commute to work, work long hours, get home tired, make food or order take out, repeat for 40 years, retire, die
This is most likely your reality (unless you’re in the minority of people who love their job and can do it forever)
The minority of people are what we call in the unaware state
They’ve forgotten their dreams and are consumed by a life that works for them, but their ambition to achieve greater things has died
When we are children, we have big dreams
“I want to be a doctor, or firefighter, or live in a palace/mansion etc”
These ideals, although misguided, are based in a child’s frame of mind
And a child’s frame of mind is the belief that anything is possible
But as we age and grow accustomed to life, we stop believing in the impossible
We start thinking that living a mediocre life in the same county we grew up in, and just doing the same work over and over, is how we should go through life
“Because there is not other way to live”, right?
But since they don’t know what I just said, or are not aware of it, they will remain content at their job, since they are not aware of the larger problem
Being in the modern age has put you in one of the most fortunate places you could ever find yourself (it has never been easier to make a living without working a 9-5)
Yet there’s still millions upon millions of people who work them every day not realizing the true reality
This is exactly why my mom and my brother don’t understand me
They think my dreams and ambitions are naive, misguided, and unrealistic
I have my mother asking me where all the money from overseas is coming from
She has no idea of the credibility and skills I’ve developed over the last 3 years
To me I’m just her son without a 9-5, and therefore I am irresponsible
I often think that maybe if I make even more she will change her mind, but instead I’m met with concern on whether what I’m doing it illegal or something
This perception is indoctrination
Its decades of brainwashing society into thinking they need to depend on the 9-5 to live their life
There is a better way
A way to make a living by sitting in your pajamas
A way to make a living without even leaving your house
A way to travel wherever you want in the world, provided you set up your goals properly
And you’re going to use social media to pull it off (because social media isn’t going anywhere)
And I know what you might be thinking, “I already know its possible, I just dont have a clear way of pulling it off”
And that’s exactly what I’m going to show you right now
To achieve your desired outcome you need a background of some kind
You can’t run into this blind, you need a plan
First thing you need to do is define your 3 content cores
Take the 3 things you love talking and thinking about, put them into broader categories, then start a newsletter based on those 3 topics
You will be talking about these things for a long time (5 years), so choose them well, and make sure they overlap
Business, Personal growth, nutrition
Writing, clients, sales
Social media, software, AI
I’ve discussed the content cores in more detail in my previous articles, so go read those if you’re unsure
To replace your 9-5 you need authority
To establish authority you need to learn
To learn you need to consume
Books, courses, program curriculums, articles, podcast episodes etc.
Dedicate 30-45 min to just learn every day
Not just that, you need to teach yourself the skills to solve your own problems
This includes building websites, designing course covers, and anything else you will require
The more you learn the more you can experiment
The more you experiment the more data you collect
The more data you collect the more information you turn into personal knowledge
The more personal knowledge you have the more things you can talk about in your newsletter that fall under the 3 content cores
The newsletter is your baseline
The more articles you publish the more subscribers you have
The more subscribers you have the more potential customers and clients you have
Focus on 1 article a week (2000-6000 words), or 3 articles a week (1200-2000 words per article)
Once you’ve setup your newsletter setup an automation that moves the subscribers (we’re using substack for this), to an off platform email list
You can use Make or Zapier for this
Send daily story driven emails to this email list with the things you sell (discussed further down below)
When you write down solutions, you will start noticing a pattern in information you know is too valuable to give away for free
From here you can take those articles, and put them behind a paywall
And your best ones (from free and paid ones), you can turn into products
You know its a good thing to sell by determining if its a problem you solved yourself
This is why you need to experiment, as discussed in step 1
Once you know its a solution that actually solves the problem (because you solved it using the same solution), you can productize it
This means turning the solution into a product
The fastest way to do this is by going on google docs, write down how to solve the problem, export it as PDF, create a product on gumroad, design a nice cover on canva, publish the product with a nice name, then link it in your emails
At all times, you need to have 2-3 three of these productized solutions ($9-$25)
And obviously they need to be related to what you talk about in your newsletter, but they also need to be validated (are people in your newsletter audience having these problems)
If you’ve done this 3 times, you now have 3 paid products
Very simple, nothing fancy, but it does the trick
How do I build more advanced digital products, and how do I sell them without having any followers?
I teach you how to do that in my “Digital Domination Framework” course, here
If you followed this step you should have 2-3 paid low ticket products, and some premium content articles you’ve put behind a paywall
This brings us to the next step..
Now that you’ve come up with solutions to problems, you’ve created another problem in the mind of the customer
How are they going to pull this off themselves without any help?
This is good because it makes selling a program much easier
Yes, you could sell high ticket skills, but this takes a lot of work
Now that they have the solution to the problem, they will need to go do it themselves
Some will, but some won’t be able to pull it off (this is how they pay for a program)
At the end of your paid product you then offer them an opportunity to join your program where they get access to an entire curriculum that takes them from point A-Z, and it will solve their problem entirely
At the start you will need to take a hands on approach, and talk to the program joiners 1 on 1
The more people you work with the more problems you will encounter
Every time a problem shows up multiple times, you add a course module to the curriculum that solves that problem
Within 6 months you’ll have a program curriculum that does all the heavy lifting for you
This means you’ve gone from writing articles for free, to sellling low cost products, to selling high cost programs, and they all gel together
This is called a value ladder
Initial readers turn into customers, and customers turn into clients
“If someone pays you $1, they are much more likely to pay you hundreds to thousands of dollars” - JK Molina
The reasons why most writers are poor, is because they don’t have a value ladder
They sell a book, and think that’s the end of it (it shouldn’t be)
By now you should have 2-3 paid products, and 1 coaching program with a curriculum inside that solves all your target market’s needs
Now we’re going to expand to different offers
Now and then you will encounter people who either cannot afford your program, have too many problems so your paid products wont help them enough, but they still require your help
These are consultation prospects
If you recognize you can help them, then you can charge them a consultation fee and tell them exactly what to do to get where you would get them yourself, had they been in your program
This is where the freedom number comes into play
Its determining how much money you need to make per month, then adjusting the different things you’re selling to a your revenue goals
If you need to pay $2500 in expenses every month (rent, food, takeout, repairs etc.)
Then you need to change your freedom number according to that
So as an example it would look like this:
3 program clients at $500 each for 3 months ($1500 → $500/mo recurring)
30 $25 product sales = $750 for that 1 month
9 consultation prospects at $140 = $1260
This means you need 42 customers per month, to pay all your expenses
Now you need to develop a system that produces these results consistently
So focus on DM sales → Grab my framework that has done over $11,000 on X and substack combined here
Focus on writing long form emails → Grab my long form writing framework here
Focus on networking → Grab my networking framework here
Reach out to 5 people a day (use my dm selling framework)
Write 1-3 newsletter issues a week based on validated topics your audience struggles with (use my ICIB writing framework)
Build a network of 30 people you can depend on to share your products, services, and content
Send out daily story emails to your email list with the products and services you sell (include related affiliate products if you want)
I teach you how to do all of these things in Digital Philosopher University (my program), here
Now that you’ve got the infrastructure to replace your 9-5, you need to stick to this schedule for 6-18 months (because that’s how long it can take to produce the results you’re looking for)
Its not going to happen overnight
You’re going to get rejected, you’re going to let clients down, you’re going to have to figure a lot of stuff out
But until you’ve been hitting your freedom number in dollars per month for at least 6 months, DO NOT quit your job
Use the income from your job to fund your education, so you can build your newsletter and online business
And from there you can do whatever you want, because you’re free
And remember, you’re going to struggle
I burned down 2 agencies before I found my true purpose
If you hate what you’re selling, you’ll burn out
Don’t let that be you
This is exactly why your content cores are so important
They need to be related to what you sell, and the problems you’ve solved for yourself
Because only then will you actually be passionate about your business model
“Find the intersect between your passion and a validated product”
Ian Pierre
