Forget everything you know about “being unique”
On social media there’s been this trend where people say..
“Just show personality”
The idea behind this, is that your personality will make you stand out from the rest
It will build an emotional connection with your audience making it easier to build a profitable brand
But what do you do when everyone and their mother is showing “personality”?
Here’s what will happen 99% of the time:
The people who resonate with your personality will flock to you
Most of them will stay followers
But some of them will turn into customers
And a very small percentage of them will want to partner with you
In case you weren't following, the people partnering with you, will make you the most money
Now you can be like the rest of the people, and offer services or products
Or you can exploit your personality even more
Why exploit it even more?
Because despite your personality, if you’re not a YouTube content creator who depends on parasocial relationships where people idolize you..
Then you are going to have to bring something to the field nobody else has
“But Ian, how can I do that apart from being myself on the timeline?”
By identifying what you’ve achieved in life that others haven’t
Sure, there can be many digital marketers
Sure, there can be many creators
Sure, there can be many business owners
But once you exploit your unfair advantages, you are way ahead of those 3
Let’s use me as an example
I’ve spent the last 2+ years doing business online
As a result, I’ve stacked a huge amount of skills, which already puts me leagues ahead of most - Read more about becoming a full stack creator here
But is that my end game? NO
Having a massive skillstack, is just one of my unique advantages
“But Ian, how do I know if something is an unique advantage?”
By figuring out 3 things:
1 - Your Experiences
Think about it. What have you experienced in your life, that can be seen as strange? And what have you experienced in life that can be seen as normal?
Sure, lots of people have experienced going to school for the first time, but not everybody has.
And even less people have experienced something in their life that can be seen as strange
Now go sit down, take multiple pieces of paper, divide the paper into 2 sections
One side should say “Normal”
The other side should say “Strange”
Think through every stage of your life up until this point. In every stage there will be events that are either normal, or strange
Write down the events as they come up in your mind, and put them in the category they fit
As you’re writing down these things, you will slowly start seeing how different you are from other people. Now we are going to use that
2 - Your Expertise
Your expertise is a combination between what you’re capable of, and what you know.
Now, go back to the piece of paper method
Divide the paper into 2 categories
One side should say “Expertise most people have”
The other side should say “Expertise I have most do not”
Now go back to the stages of your life.
Go through the stages, and as the thoughts flow through your mind, start writing
Take your time. This isn’t just some exercise. You need to put a lot of thought into this. Stop reading and go get that piece of paper, then start.
3 - Fusion
This step assumes you’ve written everything down.
Now what you do, is go through that list, and identify every piece of text that fits your 3 content pillars - I go into detail on them in this article
To summarize, your 3 content pillars are decided by the 3 broad topics you want to talk about in your brand for the next 5 years
You find your content pillars by using this formula - Your goal in the next 5 years x Your personality x Your skills
I suggest you go through that article so you don’t make any mistakes
If you’ve come this far, it means you’ve got your 3 content pillars, and you’ve got your advantages (normal and strange)
Now using your 3 content pillars, you can identify which advantages fit well with your brand vision
For instance. I have a bachelors in education..
Before I came up with this framework, I thought I had no actual use for my degree
But now I understand, having this degree means having an unfair advantage
Because I can go from educating children, to educating adults on business, personal development, and writing (like this article)
Sure, a lot of the stuff they make you learn in university is useless, but I now have personal experience teaching people things
That can be turned into coaching and educational products or services down the line
And unlike most coaches, I now have years of psychology knowledge on how the human mind responds to learning, instead of me just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks
Now when I launch my creator community, I will be able to use my knowledge on education and its shortcomings, to provide a superior service to customers, compared to other paid communities
Now that you have your unique advantages, you can start using them in 3 things:
1 - Your Content
2 - Your Products
3 - Your Services
To Summarise:
