Find the Niche, Become The Niche, Let The Niche Find You: Which Is Correct?
Read this if you have no idea what to do about your niche
Since the dawn of mankind human beings have flocked to likeminded individuals
Tribes, study groups, schools, universities, forums, influencers etc.
They all have one thing in common, they want to belong
In Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs (the world renowned psychological construct coined by Abraham Maslow in the 1940s), the third level of needs is love and belonging
What this means is that a human being needs to fulfill the needs below the third level (physiological and safety), and would then reach an impassable psychological state where they require love and belonging of some kind, to progress further toward their path of self actualization (becoming their ultimate self)
This is the same reason woman with absent fathers are so attracted to “bad boys”
They require that love and belonging, but due to the absence of a proper father figure’s love, they seek it somewhere unhealthy
Sigmund Freud, the world renowned founder of psychoanalysis, spoke of this..
Where he said the first person a child falls in love with, is their opposite sex parent
Its the same reason why men often end up marrying someone that’s a lot like their mother
Its also the same reason why daddy’s girls exist
According the Freud, having a proper parental figure at an early stage of a child’s development, is vital to proper cognitive functioning later in life
A person who does not get a proper parental figure, seeks that validation and fulfilment in other sources
This stems back to a human beings need for belonging, and the origin of “a niche”
Human beings flock to a niche because it feels like a great place to belong
Communities are formed around a niche
Streamer communities are filled with gamers and anime watchers
Andrew Tate fans are filled with hustlers and business owners
Elon Musk fans are crazy about human development and technological progress
It all comes down to this:
As a human being, you will naturally gravitate toward a niche, simply because its engrained in your evolutionary biology
But that’s not the only thing you gravitate toward as a human being
Think about it for a second..
Are you attracted by only one niche? No you aren’t
You may like business, design, and philosophy
Or AI, writing, and fitness
You are multidimensional
And no, I’m not about to just say “you are the niche”..
It goes much deeper than that
What you need is the ideal reality 5 years from now, and your current understanding of a niche isn’t going to cut it
And you will keep getting confused or be uncertain of yourself without the required experience with niches, to understand what I’m about to show you
If you’re 100% certain about your niche, then stop reading right now, because this article won’t help you
But if you have had struggles surrounding your niche, now would be the time to pay close attention
First we need to go over what a niche is in the mind of the creator, then we will rebuild your perception of a niche
From there I will break down the steps you need to take to never worry about your niche again (no matter the social media platform)
Now let’s begin
To the modern creator, a niche is a place of comfort
You don’t need to worry about your audience buying if you have your goals set out for you → This is the modern writer, marketer, or creator’s mindset about a niche
“Picking a niche”, allows you to:
Know what to sell
Know who to sell it to
Know what to write on social media
I’ve consulted hundreds of social media creators and writers, and a lot of them have the same problem..
They think “picking a niche”, is the best course of action
6 months later they fall off the map and I never see them again, or they change their “niche”, and have to start over
“Why is this happening?” You might be thinking
Because as we’ve already established, talking about one thing 24/7 365, forever, isn’t going to work in the long term
Sure, you can drag it out
You can come up with hundreds of ideas to write in your newsletter
You can teach as you build
You can do that over and over again..
But in the long term you won’t survive
Now I know what you’re thinking.. “There are people who did it”
On the surface it might seem like they pulled it off, but they are displaying something Dan Koe calls “Unconscious competence”
Its where they build a multidimensional brand without realizing they’re building it
You hear a lot of talk about “personality”, when it comes to creating content
The reality is, this is actually what makes you nicheless
Without realizing it, these people are expanding their niche to different aspects of personal development, thinking they “picked a niche”
The people doing the best show their personality on social media
They talk about their personal struggles, their achievements, their losses, their goals, their philosophy
On X this is called “personality” content
But what’s actually happening, they are exposing themselves to be multidimensional, and their audience just goes with it
Your audience turns into cult like followers, instead of seeing you as a wikipedia page
The people who talk about the same thing over and over, either burn out, or dont perform remotely as well on social media, as the guy who’s just being himself
Pewdiepie is an excellent example
People started watching him when they were 9, now plenty of them are dads just like Felix is
But guess what? They are still watching him
They aren’t there because Pewdiepie is a “content creator”, or a “gamer”
They keep watching him because they’ve fallen in love with his journey, and everything he learned on that journey
This is the essence of a personal brand, and you need to see it the same
“You don’t pick a niche, the niche finds you” - JK Molina
That quote is based on the principle that you don’t need to find the people you can serve the best, they will naturally find you
At first I wasn’t so sure about that, but the more I put myself out into the world to sell my courses, program, and consultation offer, the more true I believe it is
The people you can help the best, will naturally come to you, as long as you are putting in consistent effort to create opportunities
When I started out with my digital writing program I included designers, but after experimentation, meeting a bunch of other people, I’m thinking of excluding designers
The case studies from those initial clients don’t look so good (but I know I need more data)
This thought process of excluding designers, is exactly what JK was referring to
Its determining who you can help with your set of skills the most, instead of trying to sell something to a group of people you just can’t serve that well
And it all comes down to one understanding → Have you solved this problem before?
These are instructions:
Learn a skill
Get results with that skill
Start teaching the skill to people like you
Make the target group of people smaller according to the results
This is how I’m doing it, and how you can do it too
Just now I referred to teaching yourself
This brings us to Dan Koe’s philosophy
“Productize yourself” - Dan Koe
“You are the niche” - Dan Koe
These quotes refer to the effect of mentoring
Once you solve a problem for yourself, teach others how to solve it too
Once you produce a results for yourself, show others how you did it
I do this all the time.
If I want to know how to solve a problem, I figure it out, then tell you about it (exactly how I’m writing this article)
Sales, marketing, fitness, psychology, skills, habits, teachings, principles, terminology etc.
I learn, then I implement, they I see the results, then I redo it until it works, then I tell you about it, then if you want to solve the problem on a more advanced level, I offer you a product or service for it that solves the problem entirely
This is what “being the niche”, is about
Its productizing the solutions to the problems you already solved for yourself
How if a creator gets ripped, they release a fitness course for weight loss and muscle gain
Or how if someone builds a Software As A Service Company To $1 million/year, and then sell is for 10 million, they release a program teaching other people how to build a SaaS
You see it every single day
If you follow this principle, you never have to worry about “finding a market”, to sell something (because you are the market)
That is what this principle is based on
So what now?
Which one do you focus on?
Truth is, they are one and the same, you might just not be seeing it just yet
So let’s go over how you can
You are the niche, but at the same time you need to find your market
This means to stop worrying about what you’re going to sell, and instead turn the problem you’ve already solved, into a monetizable solution
Like how a ghostwriter gets to 1000 followers on X, then starts helping other accounts get to 1000 followers
This person is selling to people who are just like he was in the past
And it works (thanx uncle Dan)
But it can be confusing when you sell something more complex..
Let’s say you want to get into digital product sales
Your first thought will be, “Okay so what do I sell”
Then you remember the principle of selling your own solution, so you take a problem you’ve solved, write a sales page about the problem, then offer your solution as the product
Sure, that will work
But you could theoretically sell this to anyone with the related problem (and you will most likely try to)
But that’s where the issue comes in
By trying to sell it to anyone you can, you’re disconnecting yourself from the problem you originally solved
Because what ends up happening is, you realize the people you can help the best, are the people who are most like you (again the Dan Koe principle)
Funny enough, in doing this, you also follow the JK Molina principle
Because the people you can help the best will naturally gravitate toward you
I’ve tried going out of my way to help certain people
And the people who get the best results, naturally came to me for guidance over time, instead of me forcing myself on them
If you write a newsletter, you are an educator
An educator will naturally attract the people they can help the most, by productizing themselves
“Turn your solutions into products, and guide likeminded thinkers toward it”
Ian Pierre
These are instructions
Determine your 3 content cores
What are the three areas of human development you are the most invested in?
It can be anything, as long as the three intertwine in some way
Business, AI, and Writing for instance
Find your three content cores
Now because you are the most invested in those cores, you will already be solving problems related to those cores
Now you take those solutions, and turn them into products
Then you experiment with the group of people who find these products most beneficial
The people who can make use of it the best will naturally gravitate toward you and the product
Now every time you see someone who, based on your gathered data, will produce great results by making use of your service or product..
Reach out to them, determine their problem, and if you can, offer to solve it for a fee (in the form of the product/service)
That’s it for today, I hope you found it insightful
Like, comment, share, cheers
